1、 Basic principles of LED power supply operation
Generally speaking, LED driver power supply mainly goes through the following four steps:
1. Power the LED.
2. Voltage reduction: Transforming the connected 220V (or 110V) mains power into AC low-voltage power.
3. Filtering: By filtering through capacitors and inductors multiple times, it becomes a stable low-voltage direct current.
4. Rectification: After voltage reduction, the low-voltage direct current is then transformed into unstable low-voltage direct current through LED (LED diode characteristic: unidirectional conductivity).
2、 Isolated and non isolated power sources
1. Non isolated constant current power supply: Non isolated refers to the direct connection between the load end and the input end, so touching the load poses a risk of electric shock. Currently, non isolated direct step-down power supplies are commonly used. That is to say, after rectifying the AC power to obtain DC high voltage, and then directly using a buck circuit for voltage reduction and constant current control, the advantages of a non isolated constant current source are simplicity and high efficiency.
2. Isolation type constant current power supply: Isolation type refers to the presence of an isolation transformer at the input and output terminals, which may be power frequency or high-frequency. But both can isolate input and output. Front and rear isolation, the rear stage has no hazardous voltage to the ground, and the output voltage can be equal to or within a range that can include the input voltage, without posing a threat to the human body. The wide voltage performance is very good. Disadvantages of isolated power supply: larger volume or smaller power of the same volume.
3、 The main requirements for the power supply of LED spotlights
1. Distinguished by input and output: there is a distinction between isolated and non isolated power sources.
2. Narrow voltage power supply: The so-called narrow voltage is actually relative, and the narrow voltage range is mostly 175-265V (there are also 185-265V), which varies from different power supply suppliers.
3. Power sources are distinguished by their connection voltage: wide voltage power sources - the so-called wide voltage refers to the ability to adapt to the normal working voltage of most countries. Generally speaking, the range of wide voltage is 85-265VAC or 100-265VAC;
4. Double high, namely high power factor (PF) and high conversion efficiency. Products with a PF of 0.9 or higher have far exceeded the standard requirements of power grids in various countries around the world, thereby reducing pollution to the power grid; Products with high conversion efficiency convert electrical energy to light energy to a greater extent, reducing heat loss.
Simple tip: Teach you a more rustic way to determine whether an LED driver is an isolated or non isolated power source: The isolated volume is too large, and in use, the safety factor is higher. On the contrary, non isolated volumes are smaller. Due to cost reasons, the market for isolated products is not as wide as non isolated markets.
4、 Explanation of Several Terms About Power Supply
1. Conversion efficiency: Simply put, it is the ratio of output power to input power. For example, if 10W of electrical power is consumed by a lamp, but only 8W of electrical power is used to emit light (also known as useful work), and 2W of electrical power is lost due to heating on the power supply device (also known as useless work), then the power conversion efficiency of this lamp is 80%.
2. Power factor (PF): The power factor is the cosine value of the phase difference between voltage and current. Because both current and voltage are wave plots, one is a sine plot and the other is a cosine plot; Due to the difference of 1/4 cycle (i.e. 90 degrees) between the two waveforms, a PF value is formed. In order to improve the PF value, a correction circuit needs to be added to the power supply, so the cost of a power supply with a high PF value is relatively high. The PF value without a PF correction circuit is generally around 0.6, while those with a PF circuit can reach around 0.9 or even higher. When the PF value is low, it will cause pollution to the entire power supply system's power grid. When the PF value is low, the utilization rate of power generation by electrical equipment to the power grid will decrease. Therefore, the country has PF value requirements for some high-power electrical equipment, generally speaking, there is no clear requirement for equipment below 50W. The national requirement is for a PF value greater than 0.6.
